Some Memorable Games/Plays
A list of some of my personal favorites from tournament play:
- High Win: 680 (vs. 248). Played on 10 November 2024 in Auburn, AL.
- High Loss: 476 (opponent: 480). Charlottesville, VA on 22 December 2025.
- Most Bingos in a Game: 6 (DEAREST, BRANCHES, TAURINE, HAUNTED, SCOTTIE, ELUTION). This occurred in the High Win game mentioned above. A 5 bingo game of mine in Portland, OR (September 2008) saw my opponent get 3 bingos herself, for a combined total of 8 bingos in one game (very rare); mine were: PAPERING, EDACIOUS, NOONTIDE, SEEDLING, and NEBULAR; hers: OUTRAGED, WAITERED, and RELICTS.
- Most Bingos in a Row: Several times with 3 in a row (most recently, opening a game in Metairie, LA, Sep 2013: CLEARED, RAINBOW, UNATONED). In July 2019 at an Atlanta tournament I had four bingos in row (without any blanks), however, the last one was an unchallenged phony: THIONATE, JOYRIDER, LASAGNE, GASLIKE*.
- Longest Word Played: I have played many 9-letter words (including this disconnected MULTITONE to win a game at the Nationals in Dayton, OH). At the end of 2024 in Albany, NY I played the bingo STANDING, and on the very next play front-extended it to form the 12-letter word WITHSTANDING.
- Highest Scoring Play: 203 (BACKSIDE, 2024 Scrabble Players Championship Early Bird). This was a 'triple-triple' play. I have played several triple-triples in tournaments, and in one game played two: FILTERED and BARITONE (Asheville, NC, November 2008) (that game was actually against David Gibson, literally one of the best Scrabble players ever... also, in that game GASLIKE* is actually a phony word). My highest scoring play that was not a triple-triple was VIZIRATE for 130 points (also against D. Gibson). My highest scoring non-bingo play was ZETA for 95 points (New Castle, DE, December 2018).
- I also enjoy keeping track of words that I play that require the use of a blank due to the frequency of letters in Scrabble. Examples:
- INKLIKE was played in this game, and this required the use of a blank since there is only one "natural" K in the set of tiles.
Here is a graph (click for a bigger size) that plots my player rating after each of the tournaments I have played in.
Here's an ultra-geeky webpage that is the nexus of a few of my interests: Scrabble, role-playing games, and computer programming.
